Net Profit Margin
Short definition
Net profit margin is net income over revenue. It compresses operations, finance and tax into one rate, so it moves when capital structure moves.
Detailed explanation
If operating margin holds and net margin falls, the cause is interest, FX or the effective tax rate. The reverse can look like a profitability gain after refinancing or a tax shield; it is not an operating improvement.
Ranking net margins without aligning leverage and tax regime is empty. NCI and discontinued operations distort both sides.
Why it matters for the CFO
Equity investors and P/E look at this rate. The CFO splits it from operating margin to see the profit effect of financing and tax choices.
How it is calculated
Net kâr marjı = Net kâr / Satış gelirleri
Variables in the formula
- NPM: Net income / Revenue
How to read it
A high net margin can sit on poor cash conversion. Inflation accounting and deferred tax can detach the rate from economic profit. Thresholds depend on sector and leverage.
Numerical example
Net income 44 mn TL, sales 400 mn TL → net margin = 44 / 400 = 11%.
