Inflation Expectations
Short definition
Inflation expectations are households’, markets’ and the firm’s forward price-rise views. They move wages, rates and price lists before realised CPI.
Detailed explanation
Surveys, the curve (breakeven inflation) and the internal assumption are three different numbers. Loan rates are built as expected inflation plus real return plus risk.
Sticky expectations weaken the real stance of the policy rate. If the budget locks a single “official” expectation, the miss is labelled operational.
Why it matters for the CFO
Price and wage rounds close on expectations before realisation. Cash NWC inflates with expected price rises.
How to read it
Expectations above realisation mean extra stock and extra price; the reverse is a late list. Dispersion (survey vs market) matters as much as the mean.
